E5
Whirlpool Water Level / Float Switch Circuit Error

Dehumidifier displays E5 and stops operating

Possible Causes

Stuck bucket float, Faulty bucket float switch, Misaligned water bucket not engaging switch, Broken float arm or magnet, Damaged float switch wiring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the dehumidifier before inspecting the bucket area.

Steps to resolve E5:

  • Remove and reseat the bucket: Pull out the water bucket completely, empty it, and inspect for cracks or warping. Reinsert firmly so it sits flush and engages the internal switch lever.
  • Check the float: Inside the bucket or bucket compartment, locate the plastic float assembly. Make sure it moves freely up and down and is not jammed by debris or scale. Clean any mineral buildup with warm water and mild detergent.
  • Inspect the float switch: Behind the bucket area, there is typically a small micro-switch or reed switch that detects the float position. With the unit unplugged, remove the front panel to access it. Check that the actuator lever is not bent or broken.
  • Test the switch (if you have a meter): Disconnect the switch leads and check continuity while pressing the switch or moving the float. It should change from open to closed. If it does not change, the switch is faulty.
  • Replace the float switch if defective: Remove mounting screws, install a Whirlpool-compatible bucket float switch, reconnect wires, and ensure the actuator aligns with the float or bucket tab.
  • Check wiring: Inspect the harness from the float switch to the control board for damage or loose connectors. Repair or reseat as needed.

Test: Reassemble, reinstall the bucket, and power on. Confirm that E5 is cleared and that the unit shuts off only when the bucket is actually full.
