Possible Causes
Failed fan motor, Obstructed blower wheel, Loose or damaged fan wiring harness, Faulty control board fan driver
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before working near the fan. Blades can be sharp.
Steps to address E7:
- Check for obstructions: Remove the front or rear grille and inspect the fan blades or blower wheel. Clear any plastic, insulation, or debris that may be blocking rotation.
- Spin test: Gently spin the fan by hand. It should rotate freely without grinding or binding. If it is stiff or seized, the motor bearings may be failing.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the fan motor wires to the control board. Look for loose connectors, burnt insulation, or pinched wires. Reseat the connector firmly.
- Test fan motor (if you have a meter): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the fan motor and measure resistance across its windings. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Compare readings to Whirlpool specifications if available.
- Replace the fan motor if defective: Remove mounting screws, detach the fan blade or blower wheel (note orientation), and install a Whirlpool-compatible fan motor. Reinstall the blade/wheel and ensure it is balanced and secure.
- Control board check: If the fan motor tests good and wiring is intact, the main control board may not be supplying proper voltage. Inspect for burnt components and replace the board if necessary.
Test: Reassemble the cabinet, restore power, and run the unit. Confirm that the fan starts reliably and E7 is cleared.
