Possible Causes
Failed infrared bin level sensor, misaligned emitter/receiver, broken sensor harness, dirty sensor lenses
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the ice maker before accessing internal components.
- Locate bin level sensor: On many Amana undercounter ice makers, the bin level sensor is an infrared emitter/receiver pair near the top of the ice bin opening.
- Clean sensor lenses: Use a soft cloth and mild soap solution to gently clean the sensor windows. Mineral deposits or ice residue can block the beam.
- Check alignment: Ensure the emitter and receiver are directly facing each other and not bent or loose.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor harness back to the control board. Look for pinched, broken, or disconnected wires. Reseat the connector at the board.
- Test operation: Restore power and observe if the E3 code clears. Open and close the door to see if the sensor responds (some models have a status LED on the sensor).
- Replace sensor assembly: If the code persists and wiring is intact, replace the bin level sensor kit with the correct Amana part number.
