Possible Causes
Failed water reservoir thermistor, thermistor out of calibration, loose thermistor connection, control board sensing circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the ice maker before testing components.
- Locate reservoir thermistor: On many Amana models, the thermistor is clipped to the water reservoir or inlet line.
- Inspect mounting: Ensure the thermistor is properly clipped and in contact with the reservoir surface, not dangling in air.
- Check wiring and connector: Trace the thermistor wires to the control board and reseat the connector. Look for corrosion or damage.
- Measure resistance: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the Amana service chart for the current water temperature. Replace if readings are open, shorted, or far out of range.
- Replace thermistor if needed: Install the new OEM thermistor, route wires away from sharp edges, and secure with clips or ties.
- Control board check: If a known-good thermistor still triggers E5, the main control board may have a failed sensor circuit and require replacement.
