Possible Causes

Defective ambient thermistor, disconnected sensor harness, sensor shorted by moisture, failed control board input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power before accessing internal controls.

  • Locate ambient sensor: The ambient thermistor is typically mounted near the front grille or air intake area to sense room temperature.
  • Visual inspection: Check for physical damage, broken leads, or corrosion on the sensor and connector.
  • Check harness: Follow the sensor wiring to the control board. Ensure the harness is not pinched by panels and that the connector is fully seated.
  • Test resistance: Remove the sensor connector and measure resistance. Compare to the Amana temperature/resistance chart for room temperature. Replace if open, shorted, or out of spec.
  • Replace sensor: Install the new ambient thermistor, secure it in the same location, and route wires properly.
  • Control board diagnosis: If a new sensor does not clear E6, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced after other causes are ruled out.
