Possible Causes
Failed ice thickness sensor, mineral buildup on thickness probe, misadjusted thickness control, weak hot gas valve, control board harvest logic fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the unit and allow hot components to cool before working near the evaporator.
- Clean ice thickness sensor: Locate the ice thickness probe or sensor near the evaporator plate. Use a soft brush and a mixture of warm water and white vinegar to remove scale and mineral deposits.
- Check adjustment: If your Amana model has a manual ice thickness adjustment screw, verify it is set to the factory-recommended position (see tech sheet). Overly thick settings can cause harvest timeouts.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wiring back to the control board and reseat the connector. Look for damage or corrosion.
- Run diagnostic harvest test: Enter service mode (per tech sheet) and initiate a harvest test. Observe whether the hot gas valve energizes and ice releases from the plate.
- Replace sensor or valve: If the sensor tests bad (open/short) or does not respond in diagnostics, replace the ice thickness sensor. If ice does not release and the hot gas valve coil is open or not energizing, replace the hot gas valve coil or assembly.
