Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, failed start capacitor, seized compressor, loose wiring at compressor terminals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the ice maker. The compressor and start components operate at line voltage; use caution and proper tools.

  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and start device.
  • Inspect start relay and capacitor: Remove the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Check for burn marks, rattling pieces inside the relay, or a bulged capacitor.
  • Test relay and capacitor: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the overload and relay, and capacitance of the capacitor (compare to rating on the part). Replace any component that is open, shorted, or out of spec.
  • Check compressor windings: With start components removed, measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to ground. A shorted or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
  • Reassemble and test: Install new OEM Amana start components if needed, reconnect wiring, restore power, and observe operation.
  • Compressor replacement: If the compressor is seized or windings are faulty, a sealed system repair by an EPA-certified technician is required.
