Possible Causes

Clogged drain line, failed drain pump motor, blocked pump impeller, defective drain level switch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the ice maker before accessing the drain pump. Water may spill; have towels ready.

  • Inspect drain hose: Check the external drain hose for kinks, clogs, or improper elevation. Gravity drains must slope downward; pump drains must not exceed the rated lift height.
  • Access drain pump: Remove the lower front or rear panel to locate the drain pump assembly.
  • Clean pump and trap: Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the pump. Remove debris, scale, or ice from the pump housing and impeller area.
  • Test pump motor: With the pump disconnected, measure motor winding resistance. An open winding indicates a failed pump. You can also apply 120 VAC carefully (bench test) if you are qualified, to verify operation.
  • Check drain switch/level sensor: If equipped, test the drain level switch or sensor for proper operation with a multimeter.
  • Replace pump if faulty: Install a new OEM Amana drain pump, reconnect hoses and wiring, and check for leaks.
