Possible Causes

Overheated compressor, failed compressor start relay, defective overload protector, blocked condenser airflow causing high temperature

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the ice maker. Compressor and capacitor circuits can store energy; avoid touching terminals directly.

Steps:

  • Allow cooling: If the unit has been running continuously in a hot room, let it sit unplugged for 30–45 minutes to cool the compressor. Restart and see if E4 clears.
  • Check ventilation: Ensure at least 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of clearance around the sides and back of the Antarctic Star ice maker. Clean any dust from the condenser coil and fan grill with a soft brush or vacuum.
  • Inspect compressor components: Remove the rear panel to access the compressor. Check the start relay and overload protector mounted on the compressor terminals for signs of burning or cracking.
  • Test the fan: Spin the condenser fan blade by hand (with power off). It should move freely. If seized or noisy, replace the condenser fan motor.
  • Replace start relay/overload: If the compressor hums and clicks off or E4 returns quickly, replace the compressor start relay and overload protector with parts specified for your Antarctic Star model.
  • Professional service: If the compressor is extremely hot, draws high current, or does not start even with new relay/overload, the compressor itself may be failing and requires a sealed-system technician.
