Possible Causes

Evaporator sensor not detecting defrost, evaporator heavily frosted due to poor airflow, failed defrost heater (if equipped), control board defrost circuit failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before servicing. Water and electricity are both present; avoid working with wet hands.

Steps:

  • 1. Inspect evaporator for heavy frost: Remove the front or side panel and visually inspect the evaporator plate or coil. If it is encased in thick ice, the unit may trigger E4.
  • 2. Manually defrost: Unplug the unit and leave the door open for several hours until all ice melts. Place towels to catch water. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice; this can puncture refrigerant lines.
  • 3. Check fan operation: Plug the unit back in and observe if the condenser/evaporator fan runs. Poor airflow can cause overfreezing. Replace the fan motor if it does not run or is noisy and slow.
  • 4. Inspect evaporator sensor: Ensure the evaporator thermistor is firmly attached to the coil/plate and wiring is intact. A loose sensor can misread temperature and cause E4.
  • 5. Test defrost heater (if present): Some Avanti models use a small heater or hot gas bypass for defrost. With power disconnected, test heater continuity with a multimeter. Replace if open.
  • 6. Reset and monitor: After defrosting and any repairs, clear the code by unplugging for 5 minutes, then restart and monitor a full ice cycle.
