Possible Causes

Locked compressor, failed start relay or PTC, weak run capacitor, low line voltage, shorted compressor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Critical Safety: Unplug the unit before touching any electrical components. Compressor circuits carry line voltage.

Steps:

  • 1. Check ventilation: Ensure the ice maker has proper clearance around the sides and back. Overheating due to poor airflow can cause overload trips.
  • 2. Inspect condenser coil: Clean dust and lint from the condenser coil with a soft brush or vacuum. A dirty coil increases compressor load.
  • 3. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and capacitor.
  • 4. Inspect start components: Remove the start relay and capacitor from the compressor terminals. Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or rattling parts inside the relay.
  • 5. Test start relay and capacitor: Use a multimeter to check relay continuity and capacitor microfarad rating (with a capacitance meter). Replace any component that is out of spec.
  • 6. Evaluate compressor: If new start components do not resolve E8 and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor may be mechanically locked or have internal electrical damage. In that case, professional sealed-system service is required.
