Possible Causes

Open-circuit defrost heater on evaporator, Failed defrost thermostat/thermal fuse, Wiring fault in defrost circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the appliance. Components around the evaporator can have sharp edges; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps:

  • Access evaporator: Remove the inner rear panel of the ice-making compartment to expose the evaporator coil and heater.
  • Check for heavy frost: A thick ice buildup on the evaporator indicates defrost failure.
  • Test heater: Disconnect heater leads and measure resistance. An open circuit means the heater is faulty and must be replaced.
  • Check defrost thermostat/fuse: Test continuity at freezing temperature. If open when cold, replace the thermostat or thermal fuse assembly.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors or broken wires in the defrost circuit.

After replacing faulty parts, fully defrost the evaporator with a hair dryer on low (do not overheat plastic), reassemble, and restore power. Monitor for normal frost pattern and absence of E11.
