Possible Causes

Failed ice tray stepper motor, Faulty tray position sensor or microswitch, Broken tray drive gear or linkage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the appliance before opening the cabinet.

Inspection and test:

  • Access the ice tray assembly: Remove the front cover of the ice-making compartment. Locate the rotating ice tray and its drive motor.
  • Check for obstructions: Ensure no ice blocks, mineral buildup, or foreign objects are jamming the tray. Carefully remove any obstruction and thaw ice with a warm cloth (do not use sharp tools).
  • Test the tray motor: Disconnect the motor connector and measure coil resistance. Compare to Bauknecht service specs; an open circuit or very high resistance indicates a failed motor.
  • Inspect position sensor: Many models use a small reed switch or Hall sensor to detect tray home position. Check wiring and connector. If the sensor is physically damaged or reads open when actuated, replace it.
  • Check gears and linkage: Look for stripped plastic gears or cracked couplers between motor and tray. Replace damaged mechanical parts.

If the motor and sensor test good but E3 persists, the control PCB output to the motor may be faulty and the board may need replacement.
