Possible Causes
Failed PTC start relay, Defective compressor start capacitor (if equipped), Overheated or locked compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect mains power. Do not attempt sealed system work unless qualified.
Basic checks:
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and start device.
- Inspect PTC relay and capacitor: Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or a bulged capacitor case.
- Test PTC relay: Remove the relay from the compressor terminals and shake gently; if it rattles or shows signs of burning, replace it.
- Test capacitor: Discharge the capacitor safely, then measure capacitance with a meter. Replace if out of tolerance or shorted.
- Compressor check: Measure resistance between compressor terminals and to ground. Short to ground or very imbalanced windings indicate a failed compressor, which requires professional replacement.
If replacing the start device does not clear E8, contact a refrigeration technician for sealed system diagnosis.
