Possible Causes
Condenser coil blocked by dust, failed condenser fan motor, low refrigerant charge, compressor overheating, ambient temperature too high for operation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning or removing panels. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system (compressor, refrigerant lines).
Steps to resolve E4:
- Check installation environment: Ensure the ice maker is in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, ovens, or heaters. Maintain at least 4–6 inches of clearance around air vents.
- Clean condenser vents and coils: Use a vacuum with a brush attachment or a soft brush to remove dust and lint from the rear and side vents. If accessible, gently clean the condenser coil fins without bending them.
- Verify condenser fan operation: With the unit reassembled, plug it in and start a cycle. Observe through the rear grille: the condenser fan should run whenever the compressor is running. If the compressor is hot and the fan is not spinning, unplug the unit and inspect the fan.
- Inspect the fan: Check for obstructions (plastic bags, debris) and spin the blades by hand. If stiff or seized, the condenser fan motor likely needs replacement.
- Replace faulty fan motor: Remove the rear panel, disconnect the fan wiring, and unbolt the fan assembly. Install a compatible Costway condenser fan motor with fan blade, reconnect wiring, and reassemble.
- Allow compressor to cool: If the compressor is extremely hot, leave the unit unplugged for at least 30–60 minutes before restarting.
- If E4 persists: A recurring E4 after cleaning and fan replacement may indicate low refrigerant or a failing compressor. These are sealed-system issues that should be handled by a certified refrigeration technician.
