Possible Causes
Blocked ice full sensor, dirty infrared emitter/receiver, misaligned ice level sensor bracket, failed ice full sensor board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before cleaning sensors or removing covers.
Steps to fix E5:
- Empty the ice basket: Remove all ice from the storage bin. Overfilled bins can block the sensor and trigger E5.
- Locate the ice full sensor: On many Costway models, this is an infrared pair (emitter and receiver) mounted on opposite sides of the ice chute or bin opening, or a single optical sensor above the bin.
- Clean the sensor lenses: Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or glass cleaner to gently wipe the sensor windows. Dry completely.
- Check alignment: Ensure the emitter and receiver face each other directly and that their brackets are not bent. Adjust the brackets gently if needed so the beam path is clear.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Confirm connectors are fully seated and wires are not pinched or broken.
- Test operation: Plug the unit back in and start a cycle. When the bin is empty, the E5 code should clear. Slowly add ice and confirm the unit stops when the bin is full.
- Replace sensor if defective: If E5 appears even with a clean, empty bin and good wiring, replace the Costway ice full sensor / infrared level sensor assembly.
