Steps to troubleshoot E3:

• Inspect for physical jams: Remove the ice basket and look at the ice tray or evaporator plate area. Check for large ice chunks, misaligned tray, or foreign objects blocking movement. Carefully remove any obstructions.
• Manually move the tray: If accessible, gently move the tray through its rotation by hand. It should move smoothly without grinding or binding. If it is seized, the motor or gear train may be damaged.
• Check the tray motor and sensor wiring: Remove the rear or side panel to access the tray motor assembly. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors to the motor and position sensor/limit switch. Reseat any loose plugs.
• Test the motor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the motor and measure its resistance. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. If comfortable and safe, you can briefly power the motor with a low AC/DC test source (matching its rating) to confirm operation.
• Check the position sensor or limit switch: Use a multimeter to test continuity while manually moving the tray. The switch should open and close at specific positions. If it never changes state, the sensor is faulty.
• Replace faulty components: Order the correct Danby ice tray motor and/or position sensor assembly. Remove mounting screws, swap the parts, and ensure the tray is aligned per the service manual or original marks.
• Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, plug in the unit, and run several cycles to confirm the tray rotates and dumps ice without triggering E3.

Warning: Do not force the tray with excessive pressure; you can crack the tray or strip gears.
