Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator NTC thermistor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator plate, Damaged sensor wiring, Failed control board temperature input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow any ice on the evaporator to melt before working near the coils.
Steps to address E4:
- Access the evaporator area: Remove the ice basket and internal cover to expose the evaporator plate or grid. The sensor is usually clipped or glued to the evaporator surface with two small wires leading to the control board.
- Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the evaporator surface. If it has fallen off, reattach it using a metal clip or thermal adhesive pad rated for refrigeration use.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for cuts, abrasions, or loose connectors. Reseat the plug on the board.
- Measure resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at room temperature. Compare to Danby specifications (commonly in the 5–50 kΩ range). An open or short reading indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace the evaporator sensor: If faulty, order the correct Danby evaporator NTC sensor. Remove the old sensor, install the new one in the same location, and secure it tightly to the evaporator surface.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall covers, plug in the unit, and run a full cycle. Confirm that ice forms properly and the E4 code does not reappear.
Note: If the sensor tests good but E4 persists, the main control PCB may need replacement.
