Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Dirty condenser coils, Failed condenser fan motor, Weak compressor or faulty overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the ice maker. Do not attempt sealed system repairs (refrigerant) unless you are a licensed technician.

Steps to troubleshoot E5:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the Danby ice maker has the required clearance around all sides and the rear (refer to the user manual). Move it away from walls or cabinets that block airflow.
  • Clean condenser coils: Remove the rear or bottom panel to access the condenser. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coils and surrounding area.
  • Inspect the condenser fan: Verify that the fan blades spin freely by hand. Check for obstructions. If the fan is stiff, noisy, or seized, the motor may be failing.
  • Test the fan motor: With the unit powered (only if you are comfortable and safe), observe whether the fan starts when the compressor is commanded on. If the compressor runs but the fan does not, the fan motor or its wiring is faulty.
  • Check the overload protector: With power disconnected, remove the compressor terminal cover and inspect the overload/relay assembly. Look for burn marks or a burnt smell. Test continuity of the overload device; an open circuit when cool indicates failure.
  • Replace failed components: Install a new Danby-compatible condenser fan motor or compressor overload/relay as needed. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and insulated.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, restore power, and monitor operation. The compressor should run steadily, the fan should spin, and E5 should not return.

Warning: If the compressor is extremely hot to the touch or repeatedly trips the overload, the compressor itself may be failing and requires professional service.
