Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Loose thermistor connection at control board, Damaged thermistor wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.
- Locate the evaporator thermistor: Remove the front or side panel to access the evaporator plate area. The thermistor is typically clipped or taped to the evaporator surface with two small wires leading back to the control board.
- Inspect the sensor and wiring: Check for broken insulation, corrosion, or a thermistor that has come loose from the evaporator plate. Reattach it firmly using the original clip or thermal tape.
- Check connections: Follow the thermistor wires to the main control board and ensure the connector is fully seated.
- Basic resistance check (if you have a meter): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor from the board and measure resistance across the two leads. Compare to EdgeStar service specs (typically several kΩ at room temperature). An open circuit or near-zero ohms indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace the thermistor: If the sensor is out of spec or physically damaged, install a new EdgeStar evaporator thermistor. Route the wires away from sharp edges and hot components.
