Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Weak or locked compressor, Low refrigerant charge or sealed system leak
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor compartment. Sealed system work (refrigerant) must be done by an EPA-certified technician.
- Listen for compressor operation: Plug the unit in and listen at the back. A repeated clicking sound with no sustained humming often indicates a bad start relay or an overloaded compressor.
- Inspect the start relay and overload: With power disconnected, remove the cover on the side of the compressor. Check the start relay and overload protector for signs of burning or rattling pieces inside.
- Replace the start relay/overload: If the relay rattles when shaken or shows burn marks, replace it with the correct EdgeStar compressor start device kit.
- Check condenser temperature: After reassembly and restart, the condenser coils should become warm within several minutes. If the compressor runs but there is no cooling and E6 returns, the sealed system may be undercharged or restricted.
- Contact a professional: If replacing the start components does not restore normal operation, a sealed system repair (refrigerant leak check, recharge, or compressor replacement) is required and should be performed by a qualified technician.
