Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Defective PTC start device, Faulty compressor run capacitor, Locked rotor in compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the ice maker and allow components to cool before touching the compressor area.
- Access the compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
- Inspect the start relay/PTC: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the start relay/PTC device for burn marks, rattling pieces inside, or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- Test the run capacitor: Discharge the capacitor by shorting its terminals with an insulated screwdriver. Use a capacitance meter to verify its value matches the rating on the label. Replace if out of tolerance or bulged.
- Check compressor windings: With the relay removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. Look for open circuits or direct shorts to ground. A shorted or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
- Reassemble and test: Install the new start relay/PTC and capacitor if replaced, reattach the cover, and restore power. Observe if the compressor now starts smoothly.
If the compressor still fails to start and draws high current, the compressor itself is likely locked and requires professional replacement.
