Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Broken thermistor wiring harness, Corroded thermistor connector at control board, Failed control board thermistor input circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power to the ice maker before accessing internal components. Sharp metal edges are present; wear cut-resistant gloves.

  • Step 1 – Access evaporator area: Remove the ice bin and front panel to expose the evaporator plate/coil area. Locate the small sensor (thermistor) clipped to or near the evaporator surface.
  • Step 2 – Inspect thermistor and wiring: Check for broken insulation, pulled wires, or a thermistor that has fallen out of its clip. Reseat the thermistor firmly against the evaporator surface.
  • Step 3 – Test thermistor resistance: Disconnect the thermistor from the harness. Using a multimeter set to ohms, measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to GE specifications (commonly 10k–50k ohms depending on model). A reading of 0 ohms (short) or OL (open) indicates a bad thermistor.
  • Step 4 – Check harness to control board: Trace the thermistor wires back to the control board. Inspect connectors for corrosion or loose pins. Clean and reseat as needed.
  • Step 5 – Replace faulty component: If the thermistor tests bad, replace it with the correct GE Profile evaporator thermistor kit. If the thermistor tests good but E1 persists, the control board thermistor circuit may be defective and the board should be replaced.
  • Step 6 – Clear code: Restore power and run a test cycle. Many models will clear E1 automatically once a valid thermistor signal is detected.
