Possible Causes
Failed bin thermistor, Disconnected or damaged bin sensor harness, Ice level sensor blocked by ice buildup, Faulty control board input for bin sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the ice maker and unplug it before working inside the bin area.
- Step 1 – Empty the bin: Remove all ice from the storage bin. Check for large clumps or ice bridging that may be blocking the ice level sensor.
- Step 2 – Locate bin sensor: Depending on model, this may be a thermistor in the bin wall or an optical sensor near the top of the bin. Inspect for physical damage, moisture intrusion, or heavy mineral buildup.
- Step 3 – Clean sensor: Wipe the sensor surface with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Dry thoroughly.
- Step 4 – Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back toward the control board. Look for pinched, cut, or disconnected wires. Reseat any loose connectors.
- Step 5 – Test thermistor (if applicable): If your model uses a thermistor, disconnect it and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to GE specifications. Replace if open, shorted, or far out of range.
- Step 6 – Replace sensor or board: If cleaning and wiring checks do not resolve E2, replace the bin thermistor/ice level sensor assembly. If a new sensor does not clear the code, the main control board may need replacement.
