Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.

Possible Causes
Low refrigerant charge, Restricted capillary tube or drier, Failed condenser fan motor, Dirty condenser coil causing high head pressure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing panels. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system unless you are EPA-certified; this requires professional service.
- Step 1 – Check airflow and location: Ensure the ice maker has proper clearance around the sides and back per the installation manual. Overheating from poor ventilation can trigger E3.
- Step 2 – Clean condenser coil: Remove the lower front grille or rear panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint. For heavy buildup, use a coil cleaning spray rated for refrigeration coils and follow label directions.
- Step 3 – Inspect condenser fan: With power restored briefly, verify that the condenser fan starts and runs smoothly. If the fan does not run, is noisy, or stalls, disconnect power and replace the condenser fan motor.
- Step 4 – Check ambient temperature: Confirm the room temperature is within GE's specified operating range (typically 55–90°F). Extremely high ambient temperatures can cause high-pressure faults.
- Step 5 – Professional sealed system diagnosis: If E3 persists after cleaning and fan checks, the unit may have a sealed system issue (low charge, restriction, weak compressor). Contact a qualified refrigeration technician to check pressures, superheat, and subcooling and to repair the sealed system if needed.
