Possible Causes
Stuck mechanical float, Mineral scale buildup on water level sensor, Failed electronic water level sensor, Damaged sensor wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker and shut off water before working in the reservoir area.
- Step 1 – Locate water level sensor: In GE Profile nugget and clear ice makers, this may be a float switch or electronic probe in the reservoir. Remove the ice bin for access.
- Step 2 – Clean sensor/float: If a float is present, move it up and down by hand. It should move freely. Remove mineral deposits with white vinegar and a soft brush. For probes, soak the tips in vinegar to dissolve scale, then rinse.
- Step 3 – Inspect wiring: Check the harness from the sensor to the control board for damage or loose connections. Reseat connectors.
- Step 4 – Test float switch (if applicable): Disconnect the float switch and test continuity with a multimeter while moving the float. The switch should open and close reliably. Replace if intermittent or stuck.
- Step 5 – Replace sensor: If cleaning and wiring checks do not clear E7, replace the water level sensor or float switch assembly with the correct GE part.
- Step 6 – Refill and test: Restore water and power, then run a cycle to confirm proper fill level and that the error does not return.
