Possible Causes
Failed drain pump motor, Blocked drain hose, Stuck drain valve (if equipped), Faulty drain level sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before servicing the drain system. Water may spill; protect flooring.
- Step 1 – Inspect drain hose: Check the external drain hose for kinks, clogs, or improper elevation. Ensure the hose runs downhill or per GE installation guidelines.
- Step 2 – Access drain pump: Remove the lower front panel or rear panel to locate the drain pump. Inspect for visible obstructions at the inlet and outlet.
- Step 3 – Clear blockages: Disconnect the pump hoses and flush them with hot water to remove debris or scale. Check the pump impeller for obstructions and clean as needed.
- Step 4 – Test pump motor: With power off, measure pump motor resistance and compare to specifications. With power briefly applied (only if safe and you are trained), verify the pump runs smoothly.
- Step 5 – Replace pump or sensor: If the pump does not run or is noisy and seizing, replace the drain pump assembly. If the pump is good but E9 persists, inspect and replace the drain level sensor or switch if present.
- Step 6 – Reassemble and test: Reconnect hoses securely, restore power, and run a cycle to confirm proper draining and that the error is cleared.
