Possible Causes
Failed bin thermistor, Disconnected or damaged bin level sensor harness, Ice level sensor blocked by ice buildup, Faulty control board input for bin sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the ice maker and unplug it before working inside the bin area.
- Empty the bin: Remove all ice from the storage bin so you can see the bin sensor or thermistor clearly.
- Locate the bin sensor: On many GE ice makers, the bin sensor is either a thermistor mounted on the bin wall or an optical/lever-type sensor near the top of the bin.
- Check for obstructions: Make sure no ice chunks, mineral deposits, or plastic liners are blocking the sensor. Clean the area with warm water and a soft cloth.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for loose connectors, broken insulation, or corrosion. Reseat the connector at the board.
- Replace sensor if defective: If the sensor housing is cracked, corroded, or tests open/shorted (if you have a meter), replace it with the correct GE bin thermistor or ice level sensor assembly.
- Reassemble and test: Restore power and run a cycle. If E2 persists, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and may need replacement.
