Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow, Failed condenser fan motor, Dirty condenser coil, Refrigeration system overcharge or restriction
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before cleaning or servicing around the condenser and compressor.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the ice maker has proper clearance around the sides and back per GE installation instructions. Remove any items blocking airflow.
- Clean condenser coil: Remove the lower or rear panel. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the condenser coil fins. Avoid bending the fins.
- Verify condenser fan operation: With panels removed, restore power briefly and observe the condenser fan. It should start whenever the compressor runs. If it does not spin or is noisy, replace the condenser fan motor.
- Reset and test: After cleaning and verifying fan operation, unplug the unit for 5 minutes to reset the overheat condition, then restore power and monitor.
- Call a technician if persistent: If E5 returns despite good airflow and a working fan, a sealed system issue (refrigerant charge or restriction) may be present and requires a licensed refrigeration technician.
