Possible Causes
Failed ice thickness probe, Mineral buildup on thickness sensor, Disconnected water level sensor harness, Faulty control board sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and water before working inside the ice-making compartment.
- Locate thickness sensor: On many GE nugget and clear ice makers, a metal or plastic probe or sensor plate measures ice thickness or water level.
- Clean sensor surfaces: Use a soft cloth and a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap to remove scale, slime, or mineral deposits from the probe or plate. Do not use abrasive pads.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Ensure connectors are tight and free of corrosion.
- Check mounting: Make sure the sensor is properly positioned according to the service manual; a misaligned sensor can misread thickness.
- Replace sensor if needed: If cleaning and reseating connections do not clear E9, replace the ice thickness or water level sensor with the correct GE part.
