Possible Causes
Misaligned ice thickness probe, Mineral buildup on thickness sensor, Failed ice thickness sensor switch, Broken sensor harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow any moving parts to stop before working inside the ice compartment.
- Locate thickness sensor: On many Gorenje ice makers, a metal or plastic probe or optical sensor near the evaporator plate measures ice thickness.
- Clean mineral deposits: Use a soft cloth and a solution of warm water and food-safe descaler to gently clean the probe surface. Do not use abrasive pads that can damage the sensor.
- Check alignment: Ensure the probe is positioned according to the service manual (correct distance from the evaporator plate). Gently bend or adjust the bracket if it has been knocked out of place.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board, checking for pinched or broken sections and secure connectors.
- Test sensor function: If accessible, test continuity or switching action of the sensor while manually simulating ice contact (for mechanical types). Replace if readings are inconsistent.
- Replace sensor: If cleaning and alignment do not clear E5, install a new Gorenje-compatible ice thickness sensor assembly.
