Ice maker powers on but compressor does not start, no cooling, fan may run
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the compressor compartment. Avoid contact with refrigerant lines.
Steps to check:
- Listen for compressor: After powering on, listen at the back of the unit. A healthy compressor will attempt to start with a soft hum. Repeated clicking without running suggests a start relay or overload issue.
- Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the rear lower panel to access the compressor. Gently pull off the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Remove the start relay and overload protector. Shake the relay; if it rattles loosely or smells burnt, replace it.
- Measure compressor windings: With the unit unplugged, use a multimeter to measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see low but non-zero resistance values. An open circuit or direct short to ground indicates a failed compressor.
- Check inverter module (if fitted): Some Grundig ice makers use an external inverter board mounted near the compressor. Inspect for burn marks or swollen components. If the compressor windings test good but it will not start, the inverter module may need replacement.
Note: Replacement of the compressor or handling sealed system components must be done by a certified refrigeration technician.
