Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the ice maker before inspection. The compressor and condenser can be very hot; allow them to cool.
Steps to address E5:
- Improve ventilation: Ensure the ice maker has at least 6 inches (15 cm) of clearance on all sides and is not placed in a confined cabinet or near a heat source (stove, dishwasher, direct sunlight).
- Clean condenser coils: Remove the rear cover to access the condenser. Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coils and fan guard.
- Check condenser fan: With the cover off, briefly plug in and start the unit. Confirm the condenser fan starts and spins freely. Unplug again before touching anything.
- Inspect overload protector: The overload is usually clipped to the compressor terminals. Check for signs of burning or melting. A rattling sound when shaken gently (unplugged) can indicate failure.
- Cool-down reset: Allow the unit to sit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to cool completely, then restart and monitor.
Service recommendation: If E5 recurs quickly after cleaning and ensuring proper airflow, the condenser fan motor, overload protector, or compressor itself may be failing. These are sealed-system related components and should be diagnosed and replaced by a qualified appliance technician.
