Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the tray mechanism.

Steps:

Inspect tray area: Remove the ice basket and look for any loose ice chunks or foreign objects under or around the tray.
Check tray mounting: Access the tray from the side or rear (depending on model) and tighten any loose screws or clips holding the tray in place.
Manually move tray: Gently move the tray by hand to feel for binding or excessive play. If it wobbles significantly, the tray or motor assembly may be worn.
Test operation: Reassemble, plug in, and observe a full cycle. If knocking persists, the tray motor stop or gears may be damaged.

Replacing the ice tray and/or tray motor assembly will usually resolve persistent knocking caused by mechanical wear.
