Possible Causes

Failed compressor,Defective compressor start relay or PTC,Low refrigerant charge due to leak,Blocked condenser coil or failed condenser fan motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the appliance before removing panels. Refrigeration work involving refrigerant must be done by a certified technician.

  • Check condenser airflow: Pull the unit away from the wall. Clean dust from the condenser coil with a soft brush and vacuum. Ensure the rear and side vents are not blocked.
  • Verify condenser fan: With the unit powered on, confirm the condenser fan motor runs when the compressor is commanded on. If the fan is not running, test for voltage at the fan connector. Replace the Hoover condenser fan motor if it is receiving power but not spinning.
  • Listen to compressor: When starting a cycle, listen for the compressor humming or clicking. Rapid clicking or no sound may indicate a failed start relay or compressor.
  • Inspect start device: Disconnect power, remove the compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector. Check for burnt smell or rattling pieces. Replace the start device kit if damaged.
  • Check for overheating: If the compressor shell is extremely hot and the unit trips on overload, the compressor may be seized or the system under heavy load. Allow to cool and retest.
  • Call a professional for sealed system: If the compressor runs but cooling is weak, or if you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact a Hoover‑authorized refrigeration technician. Do not attempt to open the sealed system yourself.
