Unit stops and will not restart; control board beeps five times repeatedly
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Disconnect power before cleaning or servicing. High-pressure refrigeration components can be dangerous; do not open the sealed system.
- Clean the condenser coil: Remove front and side panels as needed. For air-cooled units, use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and grease from the condenser fins. For heavy buildup, use a non-acidic coil cleaner following manufacturer instructions.
- Check condenser fan operation: Restore power briefly and observe if the condenser fan starts when the compressor runs. If the fan does not run, disconnect power and check for obstructions, seized bearings, or burnt wiring. Replace the fan motor if defective.
- Verify ventilation: Ensure the unit has proper clearance around air inlets and outlets. Remove any objects blocking airflow and confirm ambient temperature is within Hoshizaki specifications.
- Water-cooled units: For water-cooled models, verify water supply to the condenser is on and that the water regulating valve is not stuck closed. Check for scale buildup in the condenser (requires technician for descaling).
- Reset high-pressure switch: Some models have a manual reset high-pressure switch on the discharge line. After the unit cools, press the reset button if accessible. Do not repeatedly reset without correcting the cause.
When to call a technician: If the 5-beep code returns after cleaning and verifying fans and water flow, a refrigeration system problem (overcharge, non-condensables, restriction) may exist and requires a certified technician.
