Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Corroded thermistor connector at control board, Thermistor out of calibration, Damaged thermistor wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Disconnect power before accessing the control compartment.
- Locate evaporator thermistor: Find the small sensor clipped to the evaporator plate or suction line. Follow its wires back to the control board.
- Inspect wiring and connector: Check for broken insulation, pinched wires, or loose connectors. Reseat the connector on the control board.
- Measure resistance: With the thermistor disconnected and at room temperature, measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the Hoshizaki thermistor chart. Replace if open, shorted, or far out of spec.
- Check for moisture intrusion: Moisture in the connector can cause false readings. Dry and clean the connector if needed.
- Reset unit: After replacing or reseating the thermistor, restore power and clear the error by cycling power or pressing reset (per model instructions).
When to call a technician: If a new thermistor does not clear E1, the control board’s sensor circuit may be defective.
