Possible Causes
Defective ambient thermistor, Loose sensor harness, Sensor out of position near warm components
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before accessing sensors.
- Locate ambient sensor: The ambient thermistor is typically mounted near the air intake or behind the front grille.
- Inspect mounting: Ensure the sensor is not touching hot components like the compressor or condenser, which can cause false readings. Reposition if necessary.
- Check wiring: Reseat the thermistor connector at both the sensor and control board. Look for damaged insulation or corrosion.
- Test thermistor: Measure resistance at room temperature and compare to Hotpoint specifications. Replace if readings are out of range.
After replacement, restore power and monitor operation. If E12 persists, the control board may not be interpreting the sensor correctly.
