Possible Causes

Open defrost heater element, Failed defrost thermostat or sensor, Loose defrost wiring harness

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the ice maker before accessing the evaporator and heater. Surfaces may be sharp.

  • Defrost manually: If heavy frost is present, allow the unit to thaw completely by leaving it unplugged with doors open. Use towels to catch water.
  • Locate heater: The defrost heater is usually attached to or beneath the evaporator coil. Inspect for breaks or burn marks.
  • Test heater: With a meter, check continuity across the heater terminals. An open circuit means the heater is bad and must be replaced.
  • Check defrost thermostat/sensor: Inspect the thermostat clipped to the evaporator. Test for continuity when cold (per Hotpoint specs). Replace if it does not close when cold.
  • Inspect wiring: Reseat connectors and repair any damaged wires in the defrost circuit.

After replacing faulty parts, reassemble and restore power. If E14 returns, the control board defrost circuit may be defective.
