Possible Causes

Faulty bin thermistor, Disconnected or loose bin sensor harness, Failed infrared ice level sensor (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the ice maker before removing the bin or panels.

  • Empty and remove bin: Take out the ice storage bin to access the bin thermistor or ice level sensor assembly.
  • Identify sensor type: Some Hotpoint ice makers use a thermistor in the bin wall; others use an optical/infrared sensor pair near the bin opening.
  • Check mounting and cleanliness: Ensure the sensor is firmly mounted. Clean any ice, frost, or mineral buildup from the sensor surface with a soft cloth and warm water. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Reseat connectors and look for broken or pinched wires.
  • Test thermistor (if applicable): Measure resistance at room temperature and compare to Hotpoint specs. Replace if readings are out of range or open/shorted.
  • Replace sensor: If an optical sensor is cracked, water-damaged, or not recognized by the control, replace the ice level sensor kit specific to your Hotpoint model.

After reassembly, restore power and run a cycle. If E2 returns, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and may need replacement.
