Possible Causes

Old or contaminated water filter, Bacterial growth in reservoir, Plastic odor from new unit, Stagnant water in supply line

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning. Do not mix cleaning chemicals.

  • Replace filter: Install a new Hotpoint-compatible water filter if present.
  • Clean interior: Empty the bin and reservoir. Wash removable parts with warm water and mild dish soap, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Sanitize system: Prepare a food-safe sanitizer solution per manufacturer instructions and run it through the reservoir (if allowed by your manual). Rinse with fresh water.
  • Flush supply line: Run water through the supply line into a bucket for several minutes before reconnecting to the ice maker.

Discard the first few batches of ice after cleaning to ensure fresh taste.
