Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay, Weak or shorted start capacitor, Locked rotor compressor, Overheating due to poor ventilation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and discharge any capacitors before handling electrical components.
- 1. Check ventilation and coil cleanliness: Confirm the condenser coil is clean and the unit has adequate airflow. Overheating can cause overload trips.
- 2. Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the cover on the compressor terminals. Pull off the start relay/overload assembly. Look for burn marks or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- 3. Test start capacitor (if equipped): Disconnect the capacitor and use a capacitance meter to verify its value matches the rating on the label. Replace if significantly out of tolerance or if bulged/leaking.
- 4. Check compressor windings: With the relay removed, measure resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and consistent with the service manual. A short to ground or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
- 5. Reassemble and test: Install new start components, restore power, and monitor start-up. If E09 persists and the compressor still fails to start, professional sealed system service is required.
