Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow, failed condenser fan (on fan-cooled models), dirty condenser coil, compressor overheating due to low refrigerant or internal failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before cleaning or removing panels. Do not bypass thermal protection devices.
- Check ventilation: Ensure there is at least several inches of clearance around the sides and back of the Igloo ice maker. Do not operate it inside cabinets or tight enclosures.
- Clean air inlets and outlets: Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint from the rear and side vents. Blocked airflow can cause the compressor to overheat and trigger E5.
- Inspect condenser fan (if equipped): Remove the rear panel to view the condenser fan. Plug the unit in briefly and start a cycle; confirm the fan spins smoothly. If it does not start or is noisy, unplug the unit and check for obstructions or a seized motor.
- Clean condenser coil: With the unit unplugged, gently brush dust and debris from the condenser coil fins. Avoid bending the fins.
- Allow cooling time: If the compressor has overheated, leave the unit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to allow the overload protector to reset.
- Replace faulty fan: If the condenser fan motor is not running or is very weak, replace it with a compatible Igloo condenser fan motor assembly.
- Refrigerant issues: If E5 persists, the compressor runs very hot, or the unit does not cool even with good airflow, there may be a sealed system problem (low refrigerant, restriction, or failing compressor). This requires a licensed refrigeration technician.
