Possible Causes
Blocked condenser vents or fan, Failed condenser fan motor, Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Faulty compressor overload protector or PTC starter
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before removing rear panels. The compressor and condenser can be hot.
- Improve ventilation: Ensure at least 4–6 inches of clearance around the sides and back of the ice maker. Do not place it inside a closed cabinet.
- Clean condenser: Remove the rear panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coil fins and air passages.
- Check condenser fan: Spin the fan blade by hand (with power off). It should move freely. If it is stuck or noisy, clean debris and check for bent blades. If the motor does not run when powered, replace the fan motor.
- Inspect overload and PTC: On the side of the compressor, check the overload protector and PTC starter for signs of burning or cracking. Reseat the connectors firmly.
- Cool-down reset: Allow the unit to sit unplugged for 30–45 minutes to let the compressor cool. Then plug in and test. If E5 returns quickly, suspect a failing compressor or overload device.
- Professional service: If cleaning and fan replacement do not resolve E5, the compressor may be drawing excessive current or have internal damage. Contact a refrigeration technician for further diagnosis.
