Possible Causes

Failed bin thermistor, open or shorted ice level sensor, loose thermistor harness at control board, out-of-range thermistor reading due to corrosion

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal components.

  • Check bin temperature: Confirm the ice bin area is cold (below freezing). If the bin is warm, you may have a refrigeration issue instead.
  • Locate bin thermistor: On KitchenAid undercounter ice makers, the bin thermistor is usually mounted on or near the ice bin wall or chute.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the thermistor harness for pinched, broken, or corroded wires. Reseat the connector at both the thermistor and control board.
  • Test thermistor resistance: With the thermistor at room temperature (~77°F/25°C), measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the service tech sheet for your model. An open (OL) or 0 ohm reading indicates a failed sensor.
  • Replace thermistor: If readings are out of spec, replace the KitchenAid bin thermistor or ice level sensor with the correct OEM part.
  • Reset power: Restore power and allow a full ice-making cycle (up to 24 hours) to verify operation.
