Possible Causes
Stuck ice tray, Jammed ice shovel, Faulty tray position microswitch, Stripped tray motor gears
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before reaching into the ice-making compartment.
- Check for mechanical jams: Open the lid and inspect the ice tray and shovel. Remove any loose ice cubes wedged between the tray and the evaporator or shovel.
- Manually move tray (if possible): Gently move the tray or shovel by hand to see if it is seized. Do not force it; if it is stuck solid, internal gears may be damaged.
- Inspect tray motor area: Access the side or bottom panel to locate the tray motor and its microswitch. Check that the wiring is intact and the switch actuator is not bent or broken.
- Reset cycle: After clearing jams, plug the unit back in and start a new cycle. Listen for the tray motor attempting to home. If E5 reappears, the motor or switch is likely defective.
Replacing the tray motor assembly or position switch usually resolves persistent E5 errors.
