Possible Causes

Defrost heater open, Defrost thermostat (bimetal) stuck open, Defrost sensor (thermistor) out of range, Main control board not initiating defrost

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal panels. Risk of electric shock and sharp metal edges.

  • Visual inspection: Remove freezer rear panel to inspect the evaporator coil. If it is completely encased in ice, the defrost system is not working properly.
  • Manual defrost: Unplug the unit and allow all ice to melt (12–24 hours). Place towels to absorb water. This will temporarily restore cooling and ice production.
  • Check heater continuity: With a multimeter and power off, test the defrost heater for continuity. Replace if open.
  • Check defrost thermostat: Test the defrost thermostat/bimetal for continuity when cold (should be closed). Replace if open when frosty.
  • Thermistor check: Inspect the defrost/evaporator thermistor for secure mounting and intact wiring. Replace if resistance is out of spec.
  • Control board: If heater and sensors are good, the main PCB may not be initiating defrost cycles and may require replacement.
