Possible Causes
Ice maker sensor open or shorted, Ice level sensor harness damaged, Sensor blocked by ice buildup, Main PCB sensor input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the ice maker assembly.
- Inspect for ice blockage: Remove the ice bin and check around the ice maker sensor (often an infrared or mechanical sensor) for ice buildup. Clear any ice carefully.
- Check sensor alignment: On models with optical ice sensors, ensure the emitter and receiver are aligned and not covered by frost or dirt. Clean lenses with a soft, dry cloth.
- Inspect wiring: Locate the sensor harness from the ice maker to the cabinet. Check for pinched, cut, or disconnected wires. Reseat connectors firmly.
- Reset power: After clearing and reconnecting, restore power and allow several hours for the ice maker to attempt a cycle. If ER IS returns, the sensor or ice maker assembly is likely faulty.
- Replace sensor/ice maker: On many LG models, the ice sensor is integrated into the ice maker assembly. Replace the complete ice maker assembly if the sensor tests bad or is not serviceable separately.
