Possible Causes
Ice maker drive motor failure, Stripped drive gears in ice maker, Ice jam in tray preventing rotation, Faulty motor position switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the appliance before touching the ice maker mechanism.
- Remove ice bin: Pull out the ice bin and inspect for large clumps or blocks of ice that may be wedged against the ice maker ejector or tray.
- Clear jams: If you see cubes stuck in the ejector fingers or tray, gently remove them by hand. Do not use metal tools that could damage the plastic parts.
- Manually test rotation: With power disconnected, try to gently rotate the ice tray or ejector arm (if accessible). It should move with some resistance but not be completely seized. If it is locked solid, internal gears may be stripped or jammed.
- Check for overfilling: Signs of cubes frozen together or overflowing indicate a fill issue; verify the water fill level is not too high and that the fill cup is correctly aligned with the water inlet.
- Restore power and run test: Reconnect power and initiate an ice maker test cycle via the control panel or test button. If the motor hums but does not move, or F4 reappears, the drive motor or internal gearbox is defective and the ice maker assembly should be replaced.
