Possible Causes
Blocked infrared ice level sensor, Failed mechanical bin switch, Misaligned sensor bracket, Disconnected sensor wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the ice maker before cleaning sensors or accessing internal wiring.
- Empty the bin: Remove all ice from the storage bin to ensure the level sensor is not actually detecting a full bin.
- Clean optical sensors: On models with infrared sensors, locate the emitter and receiver windows near the bin opening. Clean both sides with a soft cloth and mild glass cleaner. Do not scratch the lenses.
- Check mechanical switch: On models with a mechanical bin arm or float switch, verify that the arm moves freely and is not jammed by ice or debris. Listen for a click when moving the arm up and down.
- Inspect wiring: Trace the sensor wires back to the control board. Ensure connectors are fully seated and wires are not broken or pinched.
- Test continuity: With the unit unplugged, test the bin switch with a multimeter while actuating it. Replace the switch if it does not open and close reliably.
- Replace faulty sensor: If cleaning and reseating do not clear E5, replace the ice level sensor or bin switch assembly with the correct Magic Chef part.
